YM: Jessica,

Nice! Did you win the lottery?

Jessica: Ah? What do you mean?

YM: 山寨,就是, 啊……not a real LV,a fake one……

Jessica: Oh, I see! The watch is a knockoff! k-n-o-c-k-o-f-f, knockoff.

Jessica: Right. Xiushui Market is the place to go for designer knockoffs.

Jessica: (Hahaha...) No, in that case, you say you"re a Zhang Ziyi lookalike!

You"re a Lady GaGa lookalike.

Jessica:Thanks! I"m flattered!

Avatar, the movie?

Jessica: Oh! You mean a spoof. That means you will imitate the movie"s style, but in a humorous or sarcastic way.

Jessica: That"s right! s-p-o-o-f, spoof.

Jimmy: Jessica,

Jessica:

Jimmy:

Jessica: Oh, in English we call that an upset.

Jimmy: Upset?

Jessica: That"s true. 做形容词的时候,重音在后面,是 upset (emphasis on the second syllable), 指不高兴,但是做名词,重音在前面,upset (emphasis on the first syllable), it means an unexpected win.

Jessica: Easy. That team"s called the favorite.

Jimmy: 这么说,The law school team was the favorite to win the game.

Jessica: That"s right. You can also refer to the team that was expected to lose as the underdog.

Jessica: Jimmy!Isn"t your girlfriend Rachel the team captain?

That"s why I always cheer for the underdog...

Jessica: hehe..... What did you learn today?

Let"s go drink some cold beer!

Jimmy:

Donny: Why?

But look at my belly, is it really that bad?

Donny: 呃......I have to say she has a point. You"ve got a beer belly for sure.

Donny: Yeah. It"s easy to remember.

Donny: Let"s see....you can call it a "keg." k-e-g, keg. A keg is a barrel to store beer.

Jimmy: keg

Donny: Don"t worry. You can go from keg to six-pack abs if you exercise and eat healthy.

Jimmy: six-pack abs?

Donny: Six-pack abs are the muscles at your midsection.

Donny: I know it"s hard, but a lot of people say sit-ups really help them lose their beer bellies. You want your girl to be happy, right?

Donny: Enjoy your workout! But first tell me what you"ve learned today.

Jimmy: 第一“啤酒肚”叫 beer belly, 或者 keg;
第二,六块腹肌,叫 six-pack abs;
第三,仰卧起坐叫 sit-up,s-i-t, sit; u-p, up. sit-up!

JESSICA: Lulu! Too bad you have to fly to Shanghai for your friend"s wedding next month.

JESSICA: What? Did they break up?

LL: 分手就是 break up? b-r-e-a-k, break. u-p up. She broke up with her boyfriend?

JESSICA: Yes. Break up with someone Lulu, What happened? Why did they break up?

JESSICA: What"s 劈腿?

He has another girlfriend.

JESSICA: Really? He cheated on the girl he was gonna marry?

JESSICA: That"s right!

Her boyfriend cheated on her,

JESSICA: There you go! Cut their ties! If I were her, I would not give that guy another chance either!

LL: Cut their ties?

Now let"s see what you"ve learned today!

LL: 第一,情侣分手是 break up;

第二,劈腿,对伴侣不忠,是 cheat on someone;

Donny:

I was scared to death!

Donny: I told you you would be scared to death and you didn"t believe me.

Donny: Yeah. We say the scene made my hair stand on end.

连在一起,to make one"s hair stand on end 吓得人毛发都立起来了。所以要说那一幕吓得我汗毛都立起来了,就可以讲 the scene made my hair stand on end.

Donny: Right. Speaking of blood-sucking vampires, there is another way of saying you are scared to death. You can say it made my blood run cold.

to make one"s blood run cold 让血都变冷了,也就是中文里说的吓得我浑身冰凉吧?

Donny: Exactly. I am taking my girlfriend Rachel to see the movie tonight.

The movie will make her hair stand on end.

Donny: I know.... When she is scared to death, I will be there to comfort her. She will think I am her knight in shining armor.

吴琼: 啊,你想让 Rachel 觉得你是 her knight in shining armor 身穿闪亮盔甲的骑士?

Donny: (haha)

吴琼: 第一,吓死了是 scared to death;

第二,吓得毛发倒立是 to make one"s hair stand on end;

第三:吓得浑身冰凉是 to make one"s blood run cold.

Jessica: Wuqiong,

Jessica: No money? You told me you got a scholarship!

Jessica:

WQ: 就是 buy a lot of things!

Jessica: Oh! You went on a shopping spree!

WQ: shopping spree?

Jessica: Right! Spree is spelt s-p-r-e-e. Going on a shopping spree means you spend a lot of money during a single shopping trip.

I went on a shopping spree after getting my scholarship money!

Jessica: But do you really need all the things you bought on the shopping spree?

Jessica: Haha! Actually, in English, we have a similar expression--your money was burning a hole in your pocket.

WQ: My money was burning a hole in my pocket?

Jessica: Wuqiong, next time your money is burning a hole in your pocket, take me with you! I"ll make sure we only go window shopping!

WQ: Window shopping?

Jessica: (Chuckle) No. Window shopping means we only look at the window displays, without really buying anything!

Now tell me what you"ve learned today!

WQ: 第一,扫货叫go on a shopping spree;

第二,烧包叫money is burning a hole in one"s pocket;

Donny: Hey, Fang Fang, what"s up? Do you like your new job?

Donny: 打杂?What do you do everyday?

Donny: Oh! Someone who does small and unimportant tasks at work is called a go-for. g-o-f-o-r, go-for.

Donny: We say they "run errands for others." Run is spelled r-u-n, errands is spelled e-r-r-a-n-d-s. The word "errand" means a short trip that"s taken to finish a necessary task.

Donny: That"s right. I guess you don"t really like running errands for your boss, right?

Donny: She gives you a lot of busy work, I"m assuming? The phrase "busy work" refers to tasks that keep people busy but are not very useful.

Donny: That"s right! Fangfang, a lot of people start as go-fors and work their way up. I"m sure you"ll do just fine. Now let"s see what you"ve learned today!

FF: 公司里跑腿打杂的小弟小妹叫 go-for;

跑腿是 run errands for others;

Jessica:

I don"t get it.

Jessica: Oh! You mean you arranged to meet someone, but the person was a no-show!

ZM: No-show? 把 no 和 s-h-o-w “show” 放在一起,no-show,就是“没来,爽约”。

Jessica: Yes! But Zhuang Ming, who was this no-show? Your boyfriend?

You went on a blind date!

Jessica: Yes! if your friend set you up with someone you"ve never met before, that"s called a blind date. Blind dates usually end up bad.

Jessica: In this case, Zhuang Ming, you say "I got stood up"!

Jessica: No. If you "stand someone up", you fail to show up at a date.

Jessica: That"s right! Last month, I had a date with a really cute guy, but he stood me up!

ZM: 第一,“爽约,没来”,可以说 no-show;

第二,放别人鸽子,可以说 stand someone up;

Donny:Hi 杨琳,what"s up? I haven"t seen you in ages.

Donny: four feet up? I can imagine. But in English, we don"t say that....You can say I"m up to my neck in work.

YL: I"m up to my neck... in work ?

Donny: There is another expression that also has to do with body parts. It is "I"ve got my hands full".

YL: I"ve got my hands full。

Donny: Exactly. Oh, I just thought of another one---"I have a lot on my plate".

YL: I have a lot on my plate? plate, p-l-a-t-e, plate

Donny:That"s possible! Anyway, when you say you have a lot on your plate, it means you"re busy.

Donny: Okay, this one will be easier to remember-- I"ve got a million things to do!

I"ve got a million things to do!

Donny: Right! Now, Yang Lin, tell me what you"ve learned today!

YL: 今天学到的还真不少。形容特别忙可以说,I"m up to my neck in work,工作堆到脖子了;
I"ve got my hands full, 两手都占着呢;
I have a lot on my plate,盘子里堆得满满的。 I"ve got a million things to do!

Jimmy: Donny,

Donny: What happened, Jimmy? You look terrible!

But I totally forgot!

Donny: Hey! Hey! Don"t have a cow!

Donny: What I meant is-- you need to calm down. "Don"t have a cow" 也就是中文里说的不要慌张。

Don"t have a cow!

Donny: Yes! You can say chill out. It means calm down, or "don"t panic".

Honey! Chill out!

Donny: 呃....I think you better say "Honey, I"m really sorry. How can I make up to you?"

Jimmy:

Donny: Oh, speaking of the word "chill", you can also say "take a chill
pill". It"s another way of saying "calm down".

Jimmy: Take a chill pill.

Donny: You got it. So what are you going to do for tonight"s date?

Donny: Before you go, tell me what you"ve learned today!

Don"t have a cow; 第二,Chill out; 第三:Take a chill pill.

Donny: Hi, Wuqiong, do you want to go to this concert with me?

So you can use the word "popularity", p-o-p-u-l-a-r-i-t-y, popularity.

Donny: Exactly. I"ve heard about this singer"s rising popularity. That"s why I want to go to his concert.

Donny: Well, here"s the guest star list. Most of them are popular too, but who"s this person on the bottom of the list?

Donny: No wonder I"ve never heard about her. She"s a has-been. The word "has-been" means someone who is no longer popular.

WQ: has-been? has 和 been放一起就是过气的人,过时的东西。This guest star used to be famous and popular, but now she"s just a has-been.

Donny:

Donny: That"s possible. This concert will be a good opportunity for her to stage a comeback.

If this singer makes a comeback, she will regain her popularity!

Donny: Exactly. Now let"s see what you"ve learned today!

WQ: 第一:人气叫 popularity; 第二:过气、过时的人或物是 a has-been; 第三:东山再起是 a comeback.

Donny: FF, I heard you went to a ballroom dance competition yesterday. How did it go?

Donny: 牛? a cow?

FF: 不是,“牛”就是特别厉害,very good!

Donny: I got it. In English, we use the word "awesome", a-w-e-s-o-m-e, awesome.

Donny: You can also use the word "ballin". b-a-l-l-i-n, ballin. It also means "cool or very good".

或者You’re ballin! 对么?

Donny: That’s right. You can also say "you rule" or "you rock!"

FF: rule, r-u-l-e, rule; rock, r-o-c-k, rock,

Donny: Exactly! For example, 如果你看了一场特别牛的演唱会,you can say "it rocks!" or "it rules!"

Donny: No! You can use "cocky" c-o-c-k-y, cocky, to describe these kind of people.

Donny: Now, FF, If you can tell me what you’ve learned today, I’d say your English

FF: 好!第一,说人或事很牛,用形容词awesome或ballin;

DN: 杨琳, what are you reading?

DN: But you’re still a college student. Why are you interested in the life of office workers?

DN: You can use the term "office politics."

DN: Yes. Office politics are very common at the workplace. Some people say the office is like a modern jungle, and only the fittest can survive.

DN: For example?

DN: You can use the phrase "to suck up to somebody". For example, your team leader sucks up to the teachers, so other students don’t like her.

DN: Hmm, teachers are not supposed to play favorites. That’s unfair to other students.

DN: That’s right.

YL: 第一,办公室里的权力斗争是 office politics;

第二,拍某人的马屁是 suck up to someone;

I heard you got a job offer.

Donny: That’s great! You must be very excited.

I am torn, t-o-r-n, torn.

Donny: Well, 一边是熟悉的生活,另一边是难得的机会,两个你都不想放弃,it’s like your heart is being torn in two different directions, right? I’m on the fence.

Donny: Maybe you should ask yourself which is the lesser of two evils. Is it worse to give up your dream job or be away from your family and friends?

The lesser of two evils?

Donny: That’s right. Maybe when you think about it that way the answer will dawn on you.

吴琼: Dawn on me?

Donny: dawn on me

吴琼: 啊,所以我可以说 it suddenly dawned on me.

Donny: Bingo. Now let’s see what you’ve learned today.

吴琼: 第一:纠结,拿不定主意可以说 I’m torn. 或是 I’m on the fence;

第二, 两害相权取其轻是 the lesser of two evils.

It suddenly dawned on me.   59崩溃。

Jessica:Morning 怡茹! Oh..you don’t look so well, are you sick?

I am going crazy!

Jessica: Don’t freak out yet.

YR: Wait a second...你说,freak out?

Jessica: Freak is spelled f-r-e-a-k, freak; freak out 就是崩溃的意思。

YR: OMG! That’s totally me! I’m freaking out!

Jessica: Yeah... seems like you are at the end of your rope. This phrase basically means you are out of options. I’m so sorry

YR: At the end of my rope? I’m SO at the end of my rope!

Jessica: Yeah, being on thin ice is definitely not the best feeling in the world.

YR: On thin ice

Jessica: You know what? I’m not worried about you. I think you can definitely finish the assignment on time!

Jessica: That’s the spirit!

YR: 我去了! Bye Jessica!

Jessica: Wait 怡茹! Before you go, tell me what you’ve learned today!

YR: 第一,崩溃可以用 to freak out;

第二,走投无路,无计可施是 at the end of someone’s rope;

Jessica:怡茹, why do you look so tired?

I drove a night car!

Jessica: You drove a night car?

Jessica: 哈哈,you should use the phrase "pull an all-nighter." It means you spent the whole night studying or working to meet a deadline.

Jessica: You"re not alone, Yiru! A lot of college students pull all-nighters for exams. You can also use the phrase "cram session." It means an intense period of study before a critical exam.

My study group will have a cram session this afternoon for tomorrow"s exam. Hopefully we can get everything done before midnight so that I don"t have to pull an all-nighter again!

Jessica: Take it easy, Yiru. Isn"t your exam tomorrow an open-book test?

YR: Open-book test?

Jessica: You won"t bomb it. You"re a smart girl!

Jessica: Exactly.

Jessica: Then you can use the verb "flunk", f-l-u-n-k, flunk. It means you fail to pass an exam.

YR: I don"t want to flunk my exam, so---I gotta go!

Jessica: Before you go, tell me what you"ve learned today!

YR: 第一,开夜车,通宵学习工作,叫 pull an all-nighter; 考试前的突击复习叫 cram session;

第二,开卷考试是 open-book test;

YR: Hey Jessica! What are you doing on Friday?

JESSICA: Hmm, I don"t know yet. What" up?

YR: Some of us are planning a sleep over at my apartment. We are all late cats!

JESSICA: 哈哈,YIRU,that"s not how we say it. We call people who stay up late "night owls"!

YR: Night owls?

JESSICA: Exactly. Owl is spelled o-w-l, owl, I usually hit the hay around 10...

YR: Wait a second...hit the hay?

YIRU! Hit the hay is just a common way of saying "to go to sleep".

真有意思,hit the hay! Hmm, I"m quite the opposite- I usually hit the hay very late, definitely after mid-night!

JESSICA: I really want to join you guys, but I never enjoy sleepovers. I"m a light sleeper. So normally I can"t sleep well on sleepovers.

YR: Light sleeper?

JESSICA: Bingo! A light sleeper can be easily awakened.

Jessica: It"s just the opposite! You can call them sound sleepers.

YR: A light sleeper, 觉轻的人;
a sound sleeper, 觉沉的人。

Jessica: Okay! Now tell me what you"ve learned today!

YR: 第一:夜猫子叫做 night owl;
.

第二:睡觉可以说 hit the hay;

第三:睡得沉的人是 a sound sleeper, 觉轻的人则是 a light sleeper!

Jessica:  Wow, 于苗! What are you doing all dolled up!

Jessica: Oh wow, sounds like you guys go way back!

My best friend!

Jessica: Actually in English, you can call her your BFF. BFF stands for Best Friend Forever. People use this term to refer to their best friends.

Yes, she"s definitely my BFF! We were college classmates and lived in the same dorm for four years.

Jessica: You can say: we are tight! Tight

She"s super competitive. She always wants what I have! Partial BFF? Partial tight?

Jessica: 哈哈.... that sounds like a frenemy of yours. Frenemy consists of friend and enemy, it is basically half friend and half enemy!

This girl is a frenemy.

Jessica: Sounds like a love-hate relationship to me!

Before you go, tell me what you"ve learned today!

第二,关系很铁可以用 tight;

第三,亦敌亦友,叫做frenemy;

ZM: 第一,“爽约,没来”,可以说 no-show;

第二,放别人鸽子,可以说 stand someone up;

Jessica: Wu Qiong, are you coming to my birthday party tomorrow?

WQ: En...I"m afraid not.

Jessica: Why not? You"re my best friend!

Jessica: Why? I thought you two were friends.

Jessica: You can say a person is petty. petty is spelled p-e-t-t-y, petty. It means narrow-minded and mean.

You have no idea, Jessica, you don"t know how petty she is.

Jessica: hold a grudge. grudge is spelled g-r-u-d-g-e. hold a grudge 记仇。but Wuqiong, I don"t think Beibei still holds a grudge against you.

WQ: Hmm, I don"t know. 她表面上也和我过得去,but I think she still has a secret grudge against me!

Jessica: Oh, come on! It"s been two years! I"m sure she has gotten over it!

WQ: Get over it

Jessica: Exactly. To get over it means to forget about it.

WQ: You know what, Jessica, you"re right. I want to show Beibei that I"m not a petty person and it"s time for her to get over it, too.

Jessica: That"s the spirit! Now let"s see what you"ve learned today.

WQ: 第一:形容某人小心眼,用 petty;

第二:记仇则是hold a grudge against someone;

第三:不计较了,可以说 get over it; 121团购。

KAT: Of course! I love sea food!

KAT: Wow...Wuqiong, that"s really nice of you! Are you sure you don"t want them?

KAT: It"s called "group buying." It is a very popular marketing gimmick now. A lot of my friends back in the U.S. are just as obsessed with group buying as you are!

Group buying is a marketing gimmick, 什么是gimmick?

I call group buying a gimmick because it"s used by retailers to attract more people to buy products of mediocre quality and popularity.

I don"t think I can ever get a discount on LV purses through group buying.

KAT: That"s right. In that sense, group buying is just another form of price war.

WQ: Price war?

KAT: 对。People use group buying because they want the discount. They want to buy things at a lower price.

KAT: Haha, that"s exactly how you became a group buying maniac!

第二:花招,噱头是gimmick;

DAN: What happened? Who did you kill?

DAN: Actually it"s called drunk driving. WQ, drunk driving is no trivial matter. You really shouldn"t do it.

DAN: You took a chance and thought you"d get lucky, right?

DAN: You got pulled over by a cop?

WQ: Pull over?

DAN: Yea. When a cop asks you to stop the car on the side of the road, that"s called getting pulled over.

Yes, I got pulled over by a traffic police.

DAN: Sounds like you had a tough break!

WQ: To have a tough break

DAN: WQ, I"m sorry you had a tough break, but it"s no excuse for drunk driving. Next time you go out drinking with a bunch of friends, don"t forget to have a designated driver!

WQ: Designate?

WQ: Next time we"ll definitely have a designated driver!

DAN: Good idea! Now let"s see what you"ve learned today.

WQ: 酒后驾车是drunk driving; 警察示意路边停车是pull someone over; 倒霉,运气差,是have a tough break; party结束后专门负责开车送大家回家的人是the designated driver.
